Whether you plan to send them out for your flourishing business or as invitations to a small get-together, having the right postcard template on which you can unleash your creativity, sprinkle a brand of your quirkiness and have free reign on the design can make a huge difference on how people see you.

By using a quality postcard template you distinguish yourself as somebody who really cares about expressing your ideas!

Below we'll explore the basics of blank postcard templates and how you can use them to your advantage so that friends, family, business partners and even acquaintances see the sincerity, effort and creativity that will come to describe your and your business enterprise.

Which Postcard Size and Paper To Use?

One of the most common questions that crops up when it comes to personalized postcard templates is what kind of paper to use when printing postcards.

People worry that picking the wrong paper will be a dead giveaway for that not-quite-impressive work - and indeed it is.

Holding a postcard printed with high quality paper can easily sell the idea while the same design in a cheap print can do you in.

To be on the safe side, always shop around for postcard paper in varying sizes that you want.

Depending on the size, you can purchase batches of postcard stock in 5.5" x 4.5" standard sizes, 4" x 6", 5" x 7" or even jumbo postcards at 5.5" x 8.5".

Batches come in varying quantities from packages containing up to 100 prints or 400 prints and bulk purchases up to 4000 prints in some cases. You can find good deals on Avery postcard paper here on Amazon.

In terms of paper quality, you'll want to consider using matte, glossy or standard styles, and keep in mind paper density too.

The paper density indicates how thick and how 'durable' the paper can be.

For example, standard postcard stock paper is about 170 GSM (grams per square meter). In comparison, ordinary quality paper is in the neighborhood of 60-80 GSM.

What's also important is to choose paper that is compatible with the type of printer that you have or plan to use.

Look on the label -- it should say the paper is inkjet or laser compatible (or suitable for postcard printing). This will prevent the ink from smudging on the surface shortly after printing.

Which Type Of Postcard Printer To Use?

Once you have an idea about which paper (or card) to use, you can look for blank postcards that you can download and layout using Microsoft Word. If you're planning on using Word you can download our free Microsoft Word postcard templates here.

Here's a few postcard printers that we recommend -- made especially to handle the thicker card used for postcard printing:

The Canon Pixma IP2600 (left) & Pro9000 postcard printers

The Canon Pixma iP2600 compact photo printer delivers true ease of use and amazing results with print head technology that lets you produce beautiful, long-lasting photos with borderless edges, from credit-card size up to 8.5" x 11" and with resolution up to 4800 x 1200 color DPI.

"I've had the Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II Inkjet Photo Printer a few weeks and I've printed a few hundred pictures in a variety of sizes (4x6, 5x7, 8.5x11 and 13x19) and this is a must have printer for those wanting to print their own professional lab (and better than lab quality) photos. This bad boy is very fast and the print quality is just absolutely superb (I use Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy, Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl and Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II 13x19)." -- Actual Amazon customer comment

You can also visit the Microsoft Office website as they have a great collection of free postcard templates that you can use for any occasion.

The trick is to start with something that gives you a general idea of what you need to do but doesn't limit your creativity by providing everything on the page.

After all, you want to be able to express a personal idea in a unique manner and not simply grab something that you see from somewhere.

From there, it's simply a matter of laying out the page in the style you like.

You can use personalized pictures or generic ones from iStockphoto or other royalty free image sites.

You can edit in your business tagline, contact numbers, a short testimonial of a satisfied customer or in the case of more personalized cards, the message that you want to convey.

A blank postcard template can open up the door for you to paint a masterpiece without having to start from scratch. It gives you ideas where you can start from without limiting what you can do with the design.

No need to head to the nearest store for postcards; instead stay unique and personal by using blank postcard templates to give you (and your business) an edge.
